Sunday the 16th of October 2011 saw the running of the Sir Barry Curtis 5 and 10km Fun Run starting from the Pakuranga Athletics Club in Pakuranga. 'Team Bigfoot' entered almost 40 competitors ranging in age from 6 to 60. It was a beautiful Sunday morning with perfect weather for running.

The 5km run/walk started from Gills Road at 9:00 with the 10km starting from Te Naupata at 9:30. Kaumatua Eru Thompson and Auckland Mayor Len Brown started the 5km race with Matua Eru also starting the 10km race from Te Naupata. Te Naupata is a very significant site, waahi tapu, for Ngāi Tai and was a great place to start the 10k race.

Ngāi Tai Rangatahi The lads are ready to go.

Our rangatahi were well represented as usual. Their care-free manner and youthful exuberance really adds colour to any event they participate in. They are certainly seasoned runners now and continue to impress everyone. You can actually see our children becoming fitter. All this exercise really is paying off. Also running is becoming second nature. 5k for these guys is a walk in the park these days....

Race you to the sausages...GO! Our young ones are setting the benchmark.

It really was another great day for Ngāi Tai with this being the 8th event that 'Team Bigfoot' have entered this year. Our kaupapa : good health and well-being through regular exercise, a healthy diet and interacting regularly with our whanau and our community. Simple really. A special 'Thank You' goes out to the Pakuranga Athletics Club for hosting us and making everything on the day so easy. The club also subsidised the event for all Ngāi Tai participants!! To top it off there was almost $8,500 worth of spot prizes and cash for participants at the prize-giving. A great way to end a great day.

The attitude and general feeling at the event was very positive and encouraging with everyone involved having a great time. Well done to all our runners. Alot of effort was put in by everyone and I felt extremely proud to be Ngāi Tai.

Thank you also to all the support crew and of course Mr Bar-B who kept the sausies rollin' out. Without help from whanau these events would be alot harder to organise. Every bit of help counts!!
